How to Measure Segment Height for Glasses

Segment height is an important measurement for people who wear progressive lenses. It ensures that your glasses are properly aligned to provide the best vision correction. Segment height is unique to each pair of glasses so each seg height would be different if you were to measure a different pair.

Tools You Need

  1. A friend to help
  2. A non-permanent marker
  3. A millimeter ruler
  4. Your eyeglass frames

Steps to Measure Segment Height

*It is not recommended to do it in front of a mirror and especially by yourself.

Step 1: Wear the specific frame you want to get

  • Place your eyeglass frame on your face in the position you normally wear it. Make sure it's sitting comfortably on your nose and behind your ears. Sit right in front of your “friend”

Step 2: Mark the center of your pupil

  • Using the marker, mark the spot on the frame where the center of your pupil aligns when you are looking straight ahead. If you have a problem looking straight, look at the center of the eyes of the person sitting in front of you

Step 3: Measure from the bottom of the lens

  • Now, using the millimeter ruler, measure the distance from the bottom of the lens opening to the mark you made at your pupil's center. This measurement is your segment height (should be between 58-72mm)

Tips for Accurate Measurement

  • Make sure your head is in a natural position—neither tilting up nor down.
  • Measure both eyes separately, as they may differ slightly in height.
  • Unless your eyes are naturally not leveled, the dots should be leveled. If its more than 1mm different, re-mark the lens. If its only 1 mm different, can average the difference.
  • Wear the glasses again and see if the dots are still at the pupils. If it’s a bit off, please re-dot as the more accurate the dots are, the better the progressives will be.
  • If you're unsure, visit an optician to have your segment height measured professionally.
